Students can conduct additional research for Nonfiction texts Topic - Immigration [websites and resources are in the Social Studies Websites section] Students should have a minimum of 10 entries a week [5 in school and 5 at home]. Short weeks, the grade requirement will be adjusted.
STUDY ISLAND Homework Requirements
In 5th grade, students should be assigned no more than 60 minutes worth of home learning a night. This year the students will use Study Island to complete their home learning each week. I require them to complete a minimum of 1 session a week (they can do more if they are not happy with their grade or if Mom/Dad want them to). Each session should take no more than 15 minutes for Science/Social Studies and no more than 30 minutes for READING or MATH. The BEST session score (if they did it more than once) in each subject, will be their home learning grade that week. Some weeks, I they may see that their home work is the same topic as the week before (Science and S.S. especially), so I create a test version of the homework where I choose the specific questions I would like them to answer. They can do this in multiple sittings (just make sure they do not SUBMIT or TURN IN the test if they have not finished it). For example: 20 questions on Electricity, they can do 5 question on 4 days and then click TURN IT/SUBMIT when they finish.
The students have a window of 7 days to complete their sessions so they can do them anytime during the week as long as they make sure they have them done by Sunday evening. Most of the time, they can do more than one session a day however they should make sure to take their time and do their best. If they would like to redo a session (because they did not do well or were unhappy with their score) they must wait about 6-7 hours before doing it again so that they do not skew their results by memorizing responses. If your child is taking longer than 20 -30 minutes to complete any session, please let me know.
